– OPERA EXPLANATION (you can skip this if you are familiar with the Opera )

Madama Butterfly is an opera by Giacomo Puccini that tells the story of a United States Navy (Pinkerton) that while living in Nagasaki, Japan (year 999) marries a young geisha called Cio-Cio-San (Madama Butterfly). While for Madama this marriage means true love, for Pinkerton is just an adventure out of the USA.

Short after the marriage, Pinkerton comes back to the United States where he marries an American woman. In the meantime, Madama spend her entire life waiting for him, looking at the boats that arrive to Nagasaki. What Pinkerton did not know is that out of the wedding night Madama got pregnant and had a child. When Pinkerton finds out that he has a son, he decides to go back to Nagasaki with his American wife to take the child to raise it in the United States.

When Madama Butterfly learns the intention of Pinkerton, she ends up agreeing to give up her child to him, but the pain is so strong that she ends up killing herself with her father’s seppuku knife. Pinkerton tries to save her, but he is too late, and Butterfly dies.
