This is a representation of the famous marble sculpture “The Rape of Proserpina” made by Gian Lorenzo Bernini between 1621 and 1622. Bernini was only 23 years old at its completion. This sculpture depicts the abduction of Proserpina who is seized and taken to the underworld by the god Pluto. You can find this sculpture of 225cm in Galleria Borghese, Rome.
The first time I saw this sculpture I couldn’t believe how perfect, deep, and strong it was. It sticked to my retina during years until I decided to paint it with oils in a canvas during this quarantine. I spent 7 days painting during 8 hours per day where I only did this piece. It was an absolute immersion to the beauty of anatomy and sensuality. The canvas has so much depth that it seems you can touch the sculpture. To me, having one of the most beautiful sculptures hanging on my wall it’s something visually very satisfying.
Disclaimer: The word “rape” is the translation of the Latin raptus, “seized” or “carried off” and does not refer to sexual violence.
